HERITAGE

The Shetland sheep breed have been native to the Shetlands since the 8th Century.

They are now predominantly still found on the Shetland Isles, but small flocks can also be found across the UK.

SHEEP

The Shetland sheep breed are one of the UK's smallest sheep. The rams usually have horns and both rams and ewes have a short tail.

FLEECE

The Shetland fleece is very soft and silky.

They can have a white fleece, or different patterned colourings from tan to black.

Their fleece is predominantly used in Fair Isle knitwear, but also used for hand knitting yarns and clothing blends.

UNDER A MICROSCOPE

This is a sample of a woollen spun Shetland yarn, under a microscope.
