Find Out More About The Breed

HERITAGE

The Soay sheep breed is one of the oldest of the British primitive breeds, documented in St Kilda, in the Outer Hebrides since prehistoric times.

They are now found on the Isles of Soay, with a few specialist flocks across the UK.

SHEEP

The Soay breed have adapted to the harsh Island weather. They are small and hardy, and usually horned.

FLEECE

Their soft, silky fleece usually sheds naturally. Their fleece is brown or tan in colour and is popular with crafters and hand spinners due to the small quantities available.

UNDER A MICROSCOPE

This is a sample of a woollen spun Soay yarn, under a microscope.
